Minor injuries and emergencies

The NHS 111 service

If you are need of urgent medical attention then please call 999.

For non-emergency matters patients can contact NHS 111 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

If needed, NHS 111 can book patients in to be seen at their local A&E / emergency department or an urgent treatment centre, emergency dental services, pharmacy or another more appropriate local service – as well as send an ambulance should the patient’s condition be serious or life-threatening.

For help from NHS 111 you can:

NHS Minor Injuries units

If you have an injury that is not life-threatening, you can get help from a minor injuries unit (MIU) rather than going to an A&E department. This will allow A&E staff to concentrate on people with serious, life-threatening conditions and will most probably save you a longer wait for treatment.

There are MIUs at several community hospitals across Dorset, offering treatment for:

  • injuries to upper and lower limbs
  • broken bones, sprains, bruises and wounds to shoulder, upper limbs knee, lower leg, ankle and foot
  • bites – human, animal and insect
  • burns and scalds
  • wound infections
  • minor head injuries
  • foreign bodies in eyes, nose and ear
  • minor asthma attacks.
